Dryer vent maintenance can prevent fires.

Dryer vent maintenance can prevent fires.

"You should inspect and clean clothes dryer vents every six months - lint builds up in dryer vents and restricts proper venting. The dryer can overheat trying to push exhaust air through a stopped-up pipe, resulting in a fire.

Madisonville Fire Department (MFD)
Fire Prevention Officer, Captain Kevin Cotton.

Why Clean Your Dryer Vents?

  • Lint build-up can cause reduced airflow, which in turn causes overheating. When this happens the high temperature limit safely switch cycles on and off.
  • Most switches weren't designed to cycle on and off continuously which can cause them to fail.
  • The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates that there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths, and 310 injuries associated with clothes dryers. This also produces over $84,000,000 in property damage.
  • Most of the dryer manufactures recommen annually delinting of the dryer vents, for the dryer to work at it's maximum efficiency.

  • It takes more than one cycle to dry your clothes.
  • The outside dryer vent hood flapper doesn't open.
  • The clothes that come out of the dryer are hotter than normal.
